      Local 21 regrets to announce the passing of retired Firefighter Richard “Dick” Thoemke. Firefighter Thoemke started with the Saint Paul Fire Department on June 16, 1958 and retired in 1983.  He was one of three brothers that were on the Fire Department. Richard passed away on August 27th, 2021, at the age of 88. Richard A.

      Interstate 25 MVA with Extrication

      Just before 5 p.m. on Saturday, September 11, 2021, 911 callers reported that a vehicle traveling northbound on Interstate 25 left the highway and flipped over at Castle Pines Parkway. Local members from Engine and Medic 36 were first to arrive, they found the single occupant of the vehicle trapped inside and began medical treatment.

      On Saturday morning South Metro Fire Rescue held a remembrance ceremony in honor of the 20th anniversary of the September 11th attacks on America. A lone bagpiper performed while the Honor Guard placed flowers at the Fallen Firefighters Memorial, located at SMFR Headquarters in Centennial. A radio announcement rang out across the district followed by a moment of silence and salutes.

      At 1:15 p.m. on Thursday, September 9, 2021, Local members responded to a traffic collision involving a structure at 16737 E. Auburn Hills Dr. in Parker. When members arrived, they found a SUV that struck the side of a garage with damage to the structure. One person was treated and transported to the hospital with serious injuries, thankfully no one inside the building was injured.

      At 7:02 p.m. on Wednesday, September 8, 2021, Local members responded to a reported structure fire in the 3600 block of E. Phillips Circle in Centennial. When members arrived, they observed smoke coming from the garage. Members advanced a hose line and quickly controlled a fire in the garage while additional crews searched the interior of the home and confirmed that no fire extended inside.

      The Saint Paul Fire Department has joined the Pink Patch Project to celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness during the month of October! The Cancer Task Force is on a mission to continue to raise awarenes in the fight against breast cancer through our partnership with the Pink Patch Project.

      Joey’s Song ( www.joeyssong.org ) is a Madison based charity that raises money to find treatments for our friends and neighbors fighting epilepsy. Joey’s Song was established in 2010 after 4 year old Joseph Gomoll lost his lifelong battle with epilepsy. The money we raise goes to fund research grants and patient services in our fight against epilepsy.

      Passing of IAFF General President Emeritus Alfred K. Whitehead. He was 91.

      The IAFF is greatly saddened by the death of IAFF General President Emeritus Alfred K. Whitehead. He was 91. A fire fighter who dedicated his life to the labor movement, Brother Whitehead passed away September 4, Labor Day weekend. “He was a great union leader,” says General President Edward Kelly.

      Due to the spike in COVID cases from the Delta Variant and its ability to break through the vaccinated population, the Uniformed Professional Fire Fighters Association of Connecticut Executive Board has decided to postpone the 22nd Biennial UPFFA Convention scheduled for September 19, 20, 21, 22, 2021 at Foxwoods Casino Resort, until April 24-27, 2022.

      Forest Canyon Drive Outbuilding Fire

      At 11:15 p.m. on Wednesday, August 25, 2021, Local members responded to an outbuilding fire on Forest Canyon Drive in Douglas County. When members arrived, they encountered a 45x38 wood frame structure fully engulfed in flames with the surrounding vegetation and a large propane tank threatened.

      The St. Florian Scholarship Fund Committee met this year to determine the number of scholarships that we would be able to award based upon the performance of our investments.  It was determined that we would be able to provide twelve (12) St. Florian Scholarships in the amount of $1000.00 and a special scholarship in the name of KCFD Battalion Chief John Tvedten in the amount of $2000.00.

      Venice Fire Chief and Police Chief Honored for Their Service

      Venice Fire Chief Shawn Carvey and Venice Police Chief Tom Mattmuller, both retiring soon, were honored with a farewell ceremony at Tuesday’s Venice City Council meeting. Venice City Manager Ed Lavallee presented them both with shadow boxes commemorating their service to the citizens of Venice and for their strong working collaboration throughout the years.
